The egg cup is a piece of tableware used to serve boiled eggs in their shell. They can be made from a wide variety of materials including porcelain, wood, glass and metal. The ones made from pottery are ideal for more formal settings and also help to maintain the eggs heat whilst being eaten.

A Brief History Of The Egg Cup

It is uncertain when and where the idea originated from, however they do seem to appear in a Turkish mosaic from 3AD.

In Elizabethan times in England the upper class would use silver versions to eat their boiled eggs from which led to more common people copying the trend using wooden versions. It is believed that Louis XV of France often used them, and that he was known for beheading his eggs with a single slice.

During the Victorian era egg cups really entered the mainstream when they were often sold with dinnerware sets. Decorated versions were produced by names such as Wedgwood and Haviland and sets were commonly sold.

Some people collect these types of tableware as a hobby, a practice which is known as Pocilovy. There are specialist conventions held for enthusiasts along with a newsletter named ‘Eggcup Collectors Corner’.

Egg cups are suitable for both hard and soft boiled eggs and they help keep the body of the egg in place while it is being cracked open.
